Celebrating International Bath Day
Bath time is more than just the act of getting clean. It’s also the perfect moment for self-care when you can reflect, recuperate and relax away from the bustle of daily life. For parents and their little ones, bath time is a special opportunity to connect and explore. That’s why International Bath Day was created.
Celebrated every year on June 14, International Bath Day recognizes the soothing and rejuvenating powers of a bath, the joy of discovery and creativity, and the benefits of bathtub bonding for families. Join the celebration by exploring the diverse rituals and cultural traditions associated with bathing.
The History of International Bath Day
The origins of International Bath Day can be traced back to ancient Greece. It pays tribute to the day mathematician and inventor Archimedes, born in the year 287 B.C., discovered the physical law of buoyancy. This law states that an object’s volume can be accurately measured by submerging it in water.
Legend has it that Archimedes got this idea while taking a bath one day. Every time he stepped into the tub, the water splashed out onto the floor. He recognized there must be a relationship between his volume and the volume of water that his body displaced. In other words, if he was smaller, less water would have spilled over. So excited to tell others, he jumped out of the tub immediately and ran through the streets of Syracuse shouting, “Eureka, eureka!”
This story reminds us of the connection between discovery and relaxation. We can clear space in our head for new ideas when we mediate and practice mindfulness in the bath. To get started, learn how to create a mindful bath experience that appeals to your five senses.
Invention of the Modern-Day Bathtub
In 1883 John Michael Kohler, an Austrian immigrant, a businessman and a visionary, invented the modern bathtub by adding four decorative feet to the bottom of a cast-iron horse trough and covering it in an enamel finish.
After 150 years in the home plumbing industry, KOHLER has perfected the bathing experience for optimal comfort and safety. And today, we continuously innovate the KOHLER® Walk-In Bath to bring you a safer, more comfortable bathing experience for years to come.
Baths Around the World
Bathing is a universal act that has been practiced across the world and throughout different cultures for centuries. It is a common way for people to cleanse their bodies, relax their minds and connect with others. From the geothermal pools of Iceland to the onsens of Japan, bathing rituals and traditions are a universal experience that unites us all.
Geothermal Pools
Geothermal pools or lakes are a popular form of relaxation and healing in Europe. These naturally occurring hot springs (formed by groundwater that is warmed by heat within the Earth’s crust) are rich in minerals and provide therapeutic benefits for various ailments. Their healing properties help ease muscle pain and joint stiffness, soothe skin conditions, improve circulation and reduce stress levels. Visitors from all over the world seek sanctuary in Iceland’s Blue Lagoon, Italy’s Terme di Saturnia and Hungary’s Heviz Lake.
Onsens
Like geothermal pools, onsens in Japan are naturally occurring hot springs; however, they must be filled with geothermal water that is at least 25°C (77°F) and contains at least 19 different minerals. These natural wonders also offer therapeutic benefits, making them a sought-after retreat for tranquility and restoration. People from all over the globe take dips at popular onsen sites like Kurokawa, Nozawa and Hakone.
